NHM Watershed (DAS) Rehabilitation Program

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (NHM) continues to comply with all obligations as a Leasehold of Forest Area License (IPPKH) Holder. One of them is consistently carrying out watershed (DAS) rehabilitation plantings which have been ongoing since 2015. This refers to the obligations of IPPKH Number SK.311/Menhut-Il/2009 dated May 29, 2009, Number SK.19/Menhut-II/2012 dated January 20, 2012, and Number SK.20/Menhut-II/2012 dated January 20, 2012.

DAS 1 rehabilitation carried out in Cibok Village, Kao Teluk District, and Bukit Tinggi Village, Malifut District aims to improve the vegetation of forest areas and restore the function of watersheds, especially the Ake Tabobo, Ake Domu-Domu, and Ake Gamsuni watersheds, so as not to cause disasters that can harm the people. In addition, watershed rehabilitation also has a good impact on the environment and can provide benefits, especially in the economic sector, as the community can also use the land to grow economical crops that will benefit them.

From 2015 to 2019, the technical implementation was carried out by the NHM Environment Department team, then continued by CV Berkah Hijrah as a third party from August 2019 to 2023 with all activities under the supervision of the Environment team. The 1931.65-hectare watershed rehabilitation planting has been completed in early 2023, and according to the success that exceeds the 1:1 target with an area of 1708.16 hectares has been handed over to the government, in this case, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, as well as the community to enjoy the results.

Iksan Kurung, the person in charge of the DAS rehabilitation project said that, “This project has great direct benefits for the surrounding community, as the planting of economical types of crops such as nutmeg, cloves, walnuts, durian, and others, which later can be enjoyed by the community.”
