NHM Achieves Integration Certification of ISO Health and Occupational Safety with Environmental Management System

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (NHM), one of the largest mining companies in North Maluku Province, owned by Haji Robert Nitiyudo Wachjo, has officially integrated its operational systems for the ISO Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) and the ISO Occupational Health and Safety Management System (ISO 45001) as of January 2024. Following a series of internal and external audits conducted by auditors from TSI International Certification between August 20 and 22, 2024, NHM has successfully obtained ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications. ISO, which stands for the International Organization for Standardization, establishes globally recognized standards to help companies maintain quality and performance.

External auditors from TSI International Certification, a leading certification institution in Indonesia, visited the Gosowong Gold Mine. They were represented by Kristiawan Hartanto, Luhut Martahi Tumbur, and Susmoyo Adi. The auditors were accompanied by NHM’s management team, particularly from the Environment Department and the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Department, as well as other supporting departments.

NHM’s Environment Manager, Widi Wijaya, highlighted the company’s commitment to advancing its health, safety, and environmental management as the foundation for implementing ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. “Through ISO, the company is motivated to address these needs, starting from the organizational context, planning, and implementation to corrective action plans. Achieving this certification is a ‘bonus’ when ISO implementation is successfully applied at NHM,” Widi stated.

The implementation process for ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 began by assessing the company’s organizational context and identifying internal and external factors that could influence health, safety, and environmental processes. ISO standards also guide the company in formulating strategic steps to address challenges in implementing health, safety, and environmental practices.

“The entire process of development, implementation, and readiness for certification took more than six months at NHM. Achieving ISO certification provides NHM with international recognition, affirming that the company adheres to ISO standards and is periodically audited by a reputable certification institution,” Widi added.

NHM’s OHS Manager, Dr. Kuncoro, emphasized that health, safety, and environmental programs are essential components of the Good Mining Practice principles. “In conducting mining operations, we have consistently met and continue to comply with government regulations, particularly those from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, through the OHS Management System and the Environmental Management System. The integration of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 is international recognition that our safety, health, and environmental management practices are well-implemented. This achievement is the result of management’s commitment and the collective efforts of all NHM employees and partners,” he explained.
