ERT NHM Collaborates with BPBD Halut on Earthquake Preparedness in High-Risk Zones
PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (NHM), operator of the Gosowong Gold Mine in North Halmahera Regency (Halut), North Maluku Province, recognizes the seismic risks posed by the region’s location in one of Indonesia’s most earthquake-prone areas. In response, NHM’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) participated in a crucial awareness-raising event focused on preparedness for megathrust earthquakes. Organized by the Halut Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the event was held on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the BPBD Office in Tobelo, Halut.
The initiative aimed to equip local communities with knowledge and skills to mitigate disaster risks, develop effective disaster management strategies, and empower residents to conduct independent evacuations during emergencies.
NHM was represented at the event by Martinus Jong, Deputy Chairperson of the ERT NHM, and team member Aristo Elly. The session included presentations by several experts:
- Fredy Salama, Head of the Prevention & Preparedness Division at BPBD North Halmahera, who discussed “Disaster Risk Assessment & Disaster-Prone Villages in Halut Regency.”
- Basri Kamaruddin from the Ternate Meteorology, Climatology & Geophysics Agency, who presented on “Potential & Threats of Megathrust in North Maluku.”
- Alfaisa Limatahu from BPBD North Maluku Province, who spoke on “Strategy & Policy for Disaster Risk Reduction in Malut Province.”
The event brought together representatives from government agencies, academic institutions, healthcare organizations, banks, and companies operating in the Halut region.

Martinus Jong highlighted the importance of collective action in disaster preparedness, particularly in light of the megathrust earthquake threat. “The potential danger of megathrust earthquakes in Indonesia requires urgent and collaborative attention. Disaster preparedness is not solely the government’s responsibility—it is a shared obligation. Coordinating emergency readiness across government bodies, private sectors, and regional organizations is essential. That’s why awareness initiatives like this must be both widespread and thorough,” he said.
This socialization effort is expected to strengthen community resilience by equipping residents with essential knowledge and tools to face potential disasters. It also aims to improve public understanding of self-rescue strategies in the event of an earthquake, ensuring better preparedness and faster recovery for the region’s communities.
Through collaborations like this, NHM continues to actively promote disaster preparedness and contribute to the safety and well-being of the local population.
