As part of its commitment to implementing Good Mining Practices and supporting the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Hazardous and Toxic Materials (B3) Management Program initiated by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (NHM) regularly carries out emergency response simulations at its Gosowong mine site.

On Sunday, October 12, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) from the Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Department, together with the Ore Treatment Department, conducted a simulation exercise based on a cyanide spill scenario at the Reagent Mixing Area in the Gosowong Mill. The activity aimed to test and enhance the company’s preparedness, technical capabilities, and cross-departmental coordination in responding to potential emergency situations.

In the simulation, the cyanide spill scenario triggered the evacuation of all employees from the Mill and Gosowong areas to designated safe assembly points. Meanwhile, the spill response team carried out area isolation and decontamination procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and technical guidelines applicable to the national mining industry.

Muhammad Ifan, ERT Captain, stated that the exercise strengthened interdepartmental collaboration while sharpening field communication, response speed, and coordination skills. “Emergency response simulations like this are essential to ensure team readiness in critical situations while fostering a strong safety culture across all organizational levels,” said Ifan.

Echoing this, Alip Puspandaru, Manager of the Ore Treatment Department, emphasized that the activity also reflects the company’s commitment to complying with ESDM’s safety standards. “Since our department works directly with hazardous cyanide materials, it’s crucial to ensure proper control measures to maintain safety for both workers and the environment. This simulation is an excellent opportunity to test team preparedness and coordination in handling emergency situations. The activity went smoothly, supported by strong teamwork, from victim handling and spill containment to employee evacuation to safe areas,” Alip explained.

The simulation ran effectively, involving various departments in victim management, area security, and evacuation processes. Participants gave positive feedback about the exercise. Fahri Saputra, Officer of Recruitment, GA & Formalities, noted that the activity served as an important refresher for all employees to remain vigilant and ready for emergencies.

Meanwhile, Mathelda Kalalo, an intern who participated in the evacuation, shared her valuable experience. “At first, I was confused when I heard the siren, but with clear guidance, we were able to gather safely at the assembly point. I witnessed firsthand how the mining company prioritizes safety for everyone, including interns,” she said.

Through regular emergency simulations, NHM not only ensures its preparedness for potential emergencies but also supports the government’s efforts to promote sustainable mining practices and a strong OHS culture across Indonesia. This initiative reaffirms NHM’s commitment to continuously enhancing safety standards, regulatory compliance, and creating a safe, productive, and environmentally responsible workplace.
