NHM ERT Team Deployed for Flood Emergency Response in North Sumatra

The recent flooding disaster in Sumatra has drawn widespread attention from various sectors, including PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (NHM), the gold mining company operating in Gosowong. Given the urgency of the situation, the NHM Emergency Response Team (ERT) mobilized its members to provide direct assistance to affected communities.

The humanitarian mission was carried out through close coordination with various agencies and Search and Rescue (SAR) units, including the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). Operations were coordinated from the ESDM Disaster Preparedness Post at Agincourt Resources in Napa Village, South Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra.

The NHM ERT team deployed to the field consisted of Yani Alhabsi as Team Commander, Risal Sahiba and Ricky Akbar Darmin as rescuers, and Mulki Hadi as a paramedic. Prior to deployment, the team prepared physically and mentally, and ensured the availability of necessary equipment, such as tents, life jackets, medical supplies, flashlights, personal protective equipment (PPE), and mountaineering tools to navigate the extreme terrain.

“Although conditions on the ground were extremely challenging, with frequently changing weather and difficult terrain, the synergy between agencies and SAR units, along with our team spirit, kept us strong and united,” said Yani Alhabsi.

One of the greatest challenges in this mission was disrupted access due to damaged infrastructure. Communication breakdowns and limited resources further slowed response efforts, forcing the team to work harder to reach isolated areas. In many locations, floodwaters and thick mud reaching chest height required the use of rubber boats to deliver aid and evacuate residents, often under swift currents and highly dangerous conditions.

Rohman Sukatma, NHM’s Deputy Manager of HSE, emphasized that NHM’s involvement in this operation is part of the company’s social responsibility. “As part of our commitment to the community, we felt compelled to act immediately and deploy our ERT team. This humanitarian mission is a tangible expression of our concern for those affected by the floods in Sumatra,” he said.

Together with other teams under the coordination of the ESDM Disaster Response Team, the NHM ERT continues to play an active role in search and rescue operations and in providing assistance to victims. Their presence contributes directly to strengthening national efforts in responding to this large-scale disaster, which has captured public attention across Indonesia.
