Strengthening Flood Mitigation for Residential Areas, NHM Peduli Builds Riverbank Retaining Wall in Tahane Village Through Mutual Cooperation

Strengthening basic infrastructure and protecting residential areas from disaster risks remain key priorities in sustainable national development. In line with these efforts, PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (NHM), through its NHM Peduli program, has contributed to flood mitigation by constructing a riverbank retaining wall in Tahane Village, Malifut District, North Halmahera Regency, to reduce the risk of flooding caused by river overflow during heavy rainfall.

Tahane Village is crossed by a river that often experiences sudden surges in water levels during periods of intense rain. These overflows have repeatedly flooded nearby residential areas, damaging homes and disrupting daily activities. In response to this ongoing risk, the Tahane Village Government submitted a proposal to NHM Peduli to support the construction of a retaining wall as a long-term protective measure for the community.

Responding to this request, NHM Peduli completed the construction of a 117-meter riverbank retaining wall along the Tahane watershed. The project was officially handed over through the signing of the Program Handover Minutes (Berita Acara Program/BAP) on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, which also marked the transfer of responsibility for future maintenance to the Village Government. This collaboration reflects strong synergy between the private sector and village authorities in strengthening community-based flood mitigation infrastructure.

The construction was carried out through mutual cooperation with active participation from local residents. NHM provided construction materials and equipment, while villagers contributed labor through community self-help initiatives coordinated by neighborhood units (RT). Thanks to this strong community involvement, the project was completed ahead of schedule.

Tahane Village Head, Rafid U. Basyarun, accompanied by the Chair of the Village Consultative Body (BPD), expressed his appreciation for NHM’s support.

“On behalf of the people of Tahane Village, we thank NHM, especially President Director Mr. Haji Robert Nitiyudo Wachjo, for the strong support in building this riverbank retaining wall. This construction is very important in protecting our community from the threat of flooding,” he said.

Meanwhile, Head of NHM’s Sustainable Development Division, M. Irwan Malaka, praised the collaboration between residents, village authorities, and the company throughout the construction process.

“The strong cooperation between the community, village government, and NHM allowed this project to be completed faster than planned. We hope this spirit of mutual cooperation continues and becomes an example for other villages,” Irwan said.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining the sustainability of the infrastructure, including reminding residents not to dispose of waste into the river, as blockages could increase the risk of flooding in residential areas.

The construction of the riverbank retaining wall is expected not only to improve community safety from flood risks, but also to strengthen long-term collaboration between NHM, village governments, and local communities in building resilient and sustainable village infrastructure.
