A Journey of Strength: NHM Peduli Helps 4-Year-Old Leukemia Patient Return Home Safely
For families living in Indonesia’s island regions, access to advanced medical care often requires long journeys and difficult decisions. For Pratiwi Baba, a 4-year-old girl from Sangowo Timur Village in Morotai Timur District, that journey became a test of resilience.
Diagnosed with leukemia, Pratiwi needed intensive treatment that was not available in her hometown. Through its corporate social responsibility initiative, NHM Peduli, PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (NHM) stepped in to provide comprehensive assistance, supporting her medical care until her condition improved and she was able to return home safely.
Pratiwi, the third child of M. Abdi Baba and Faradila Dabi Dabi, was first treated at Tobelo Regional Hospital (RSUD Tobelo) in August 2025. Following medical recommendations, she was referred to RSUP Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou Hospital in Manado for specialized treatment. With the support of NHM Peduli, Pratiwi underwent care in Manado from August 29, 2025, to February 3, 2026.

Throughout the five-month treatment period, the NHM Peduli team provided end-to-end assistance. This included helping the family manage BPJS Health administrative processes, arranging transportation, and covering accommodation and daily living expenses while Pratiwi received treatment away from home.
Dr. Syamsul Bahri, who accompanied the NHM Peduli team, explained that Pratiwi showed significant progress during the course of treatment.
“After approximately five months, the medical team confirmed that her condition had improved and allowed her to return to Tobelo. On February 5, 2026, she was discharged and will continue with routine check-ups and health monitoring at RSUD Tobelo,” he said.
For Pratiwi’s family, the support meant more than logistical assistance, it restored hope.

“When our child was hospitalized in Tobelo, we almost lost hope,” said her father, M. Abdi Baba. “The support and guidance from Mr. Haji Robert through the NHM Peduli team became a great source of strength for our family. Alhamdulillah, Tiwi was able to receive treatment in Manado and is now home in improved condition.”
Through NHM Peduli, PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals continues to implement programs in healthcare, education, and humanitarian assistance. The initiative reflects the company’s broader commitment to improving quality of life, particularly for communities within and beyond its mining ring area, while contributing to stronger healthcare access in North Maluku.
